Residents of Dobi community in the Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory said on Monday that they are facing untold hardship as a result of the collapse of the bridge connecting them with other communities.
The District Head of the Community, Sumali Sule-Dobi, said this in Dobi during a visit to the scene by Zakari Angulu, the Chairman of Gwagwalada Area Council.
Mr. Sule-Dobi said that the collapse of the only bridge linking the community has cut off the people from Gwagwalada town, adding that the incident was caused by flood after Sunday's downpour.
He said the road is important not only to Dobi residents but to the country because it is the shortest and traffic-free road to Niger State from Abuja.
"This is harvest period and if something urgent is not done to reconstruct the bridge; it will amount to farmers in the community selling their products at give-away prices since they have no road linking the community.
"We are appealing to the FCT Minister to, as a matter of urgency, to reconstruct the bridge in the interest of the community, especially farmers and other users of the road," he said.
The district head called on residents of the community to remain calm, and expressed optimism that the minister would soon address the problem.
In his remark, Mr. Angulu said that the problem was envisaged following the gradual washing of the sides of the bridge. He said his council had written the office of the FCT Minister, about the bridge, before the collapse and would do so again.
"At this time, we will not only report but we will follow up to ensure that the minister is here to see the level of damages.
"On our own as Area Council, we will work out a temporary measure to make the place passable before the coming of the minister in the interest of the residents of the community," he said.
Mr. Angulu further cautioned parents against allowing their children to play in the affected area.
