Plans to produce N5, 000 notes is unpatriotic -Gowon

Former Head of State of Nigeria, General Yakubu Gowon, has stated that the plan by Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, to go on with the production N5, 000 notes despite public opinion against the move is unpatriotic.

Speaking at the one-day 'Patriots on National Symbols', organized by the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Gowon said that the introduction of the N5, 000 note will devalue the naira.

The Former Head of State said the National flag, Anthem, symbols and languages, provide the justification for identity, freedom and sovereignty that can attract foreign investors for future development.

He called on the citizenry to learn and understand the need to respect these national symbols. He also urged Nigerians to respect the country's constitution and remain focused in sustaining democracy, which remains the best form of governance.

He also advised the National Orientation Agency to work closely with the National Assembly, to make out the rules for a better understanding of the national symbols, geared towards sustaining the country's democracy.
