Houses, cars burnt as authorities shut down Uniport

Uniport in crisis following the brutal murder of four of its students.
Reports from Aluu, a Port-Harcourt community indicate that several houses and cars were destroyed by an irate mob on Tuesday evening. Aluu is the community where four students were killed on Friday, by residents, for alleged theft.

Earlier in the day, students of the University of Port-Harcourt embarked on a protest march around the Aluu community to protest the killing of four of their colleagues. The protest, which saw the students block the popular Choba junction, led to the burning of some houses in the community.

The earlier protest was witnessed by men of the Nigerian Police Force just as a police helicopter hovered over the students during the protest. The protest was believed to have ended in the evening and was set to continue on Wednesday.

It is not clear who is responsible for the arson which occurred in the evening, as reports indicate that the panic in Aluu has caused several students to pack their belongings and run away from the community, which has a high student population

A medical science student of the institution who called PREMIUM TIMES on Tuesday evening said his friends living in Aluu had packed their belongings and moved out of the community for fear of losing their lives or property. The university authorities had earlier declared this week as a mourning week and free of academic activities.

The violence has now caused the university authorities to close the university indefinitely while an official statement from the institution is expected anytime soon.

Efforts to reach the police spokesperson for Rivers State, Ben Ugwuegbulam, failed as he did not respond to nor return calls made to him.

Mr. Ugwuegbulam had earlier in a telephone interview denied reports that the police were present when the four students were brutalized and burnt to death on Friday. He said the police were investigating the crime and had made thirteen arrests.

  2. We d mothers of dis country commiserate wth our fellow mothers over d loss of Ugonna, Tekena, Lloyd and Chidiaka. No doubt they were to excel, but d evil community in d name of Aluu in Portharcourt Rivers State cut dem short. Nevertheless, dey will never die cos dey will forever live in our Hearts. And in dis our Country Nigeria, never again will such happen cos whn d nemesis dat has befallen Aluu will start to boomerang, even their graves will be too hot for dem. We therefore decree and say with one voice dat d Aluu student who is d borrower, their chief and the killers be made to die d same way - naked, beaten into a pulp and marched to d same execution ground where there heads and faces will be smitten with woods, planks and stones, thereafter set ablaze. This will not bring back our beloved sons, but it will serve as a deterrant to people. On dat day, our ever sleeping police will go to sleep as usual and will ignore evry call made to dis effect. As for d so called mothers of dis community who went to sleep so dat ur husbands and sons can carry out dis dastardly act, u will nvr evr know peace again. Ur sons shall before ur eyes be cut down in d same manner for no just cause. And for Aluu - u hv just danced d dance of d spirits. Not until u produce d borrower, d chief and d killers, ur community will never have any male child dat will live past d age of 24. Dos children u slaughtered were between 20 to 24. On their 24th birthday, each male child of your comminity will die a gruesome death and his carcass fed to d vultures and flies. On dat day your hearts will bleed just like the hearts of d real mothers of dis Country Nig are bleeding now and u will find no one to console u cos ALUU is a condemned community. Ugonna, Tekena, Lloyd and Chidiaka, rest in d bossom of d Almighty. U can never ever be forgotten. Adieu beautiful Sons. For dos who are saddists and not real mothers, ignore dis. Pls pass to all mothers in d country. We have decreed.
